On the Vallee Blanche off-piste skiing descent - winter 2010

"Thanks again for the great Vallee Blanche trip on Saturday. One of my best day's skiing ever"

Summary of the guided Vallee Blanche ski descent

An amazing 22km off-piste glaciated ski descent with unparalled scenery. There are many routes down the VB from straightforward gentle slopes to 40 degree, challenging, exposed, steep riding.

The normal descent in good conditions is suitable for skiers with a positive attitude who can comfortably ski red runs on piste.

The majority of the descent is off-piste on glaciated terrain. Your guide will equip you with the required safety equipment of a harness and avalanche transceiver.

The day starts with a dramatic cable car ride which takes you 3km up to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi. At the summit station, on a clear day, we will have time to enjoy the views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn in Zermatt and the Gran Paradiso in Italy.

Before starting the descent down the Vallee Blanche your guide will equip the group with the necessary safety equipment before guiding you down the thrilling arête. From here you will put on your skis and your Mountain Adventure Guides guide will take the group on one of the many different variants down the Vallee Blanche. The actual route taken will depend on conditions at the time and the ability of the group.

During the day you will stop for a picnic lunch or at the Requin mountain hut where hot food is served. There will also be many opportunities to stop to take lots of photographs of the breathtaking scenery.

In good conditions it is possible, with a short walk uphill on foot, to reach tracks on which we can ski down through the forest to Chamonix. Alternatively, just before the end of the glacier, we walk up some steps to a cable car that will take us up to the Montenvers train station. From here we will take the train down to Chamonix for a well deserved beer. This is a truly fantastic day and a once-in-a-lifetime skiing experience. back to top

Skiing the Vallee Blanche – is it for me?

The VB is a long, unpisted descent through amazing scenery. In good conditions a positive, adventurous skier who can comfortably deal with red runs on piste will usually enjoy this unique ski descent. We recommend carrying a small rucksack to hold a snack/picnic and drink plus a camera for the day. We have guided skiers as young as 10 and as not so young as 75 on the Vallee Blanche! back to top
